Over 50 Years

The New Ulm Ice & Coal Company originated in the late 1800's in New Ulm, MN. In order to distribute ice, the company would cut blocks from the river during winter months and store it to supply the local tavern and cheese company. Under new management, the operation became D&H Transportation in 1959, still producing ice to cool rail cars for Kraft Cheese.

Through a meeting with a railroad executive named Suitcase Jones in downtown Chicago, IL, the operation expanded its’ partnership with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad by adding a railcar icing operation in Worthington, MN. Followed soon after by Westpoint, NE, Sterling, IL and another with the Milwaukee Railroad in Perry, IA.
